2021 Surf Cup Finalists
LA Bulls B2004 Black 2021 Surf Cup Finalists
After the rain, the rainbow appeared, but the pot of gold still shines in the future.
During the fall of 2013, Coach Kelly Parker put together a unique group of young male soccer -players. Some of those who continued to play for seven consecutive seasons together. A few of those players combined with other talented and unique players who’ve played together for three successive seasons make up the LA Bulls B2004 Black under the guidance of the exceptionally decorated soccer player, Coach Kelly.
COVID changed the way most people live their lives. The LA Bulls B2004 Black squad continued to train at home and on the field even with the uncomfortable masks to prepare for their first appearance in the coveted invitation-only 2020 San Diego Surf Cup. The boys battled and defeated every opponent, including three clean sheets on their way to the final match—the elusive Championship Cup within reach.
A feat for any team. Even more rewarding participating for the first time with the “the best of the best.”
Coach Kelly said of the tournament itself, “It was a very well run. Surf Cup organizers provided safety protocols to ensure families and players felt comfortable, from hand sanitizer stations, distance markers for spectator seating, and line formation to a designated Field Marshall. Everyone wore masks and appeared to be extremely respectful of one another.”
Coach continued, “Naturally, the boys were gutted. It’s hard to get 2nd place because you end on a loss. There’s a tendency towards negative feelings associated with that. However, they understand that this is not the end of the road; it’s part of our progression. They played a proper football style, trying to connect and move the ball in the right way. Their discipline didn’t stray from the tactics for a result that may give them short-term success, but it won’t impress top-level programs and scouts, which we were trying to accomplish. So, mission accomplished!”
We asked Coach Kelly about her proudest moments, “What made me the proudest was we won and lost as a team, which has become our motto. It’s not easy to make every player happy in a competitive environment. Yet, each one stepped up and contributed when given the opportunity. And when games were tight and substitutions rare, the boys gave tremendous support and energy to their teammates on the field. Every game was a true team effort. My players showed true character and class no matter what the situation. I’m incredibly proud of them.”
